The Sóller Train: a journey through orange groves and hand-dug tunnels

Some journeys are a way of getting somewhere and others are the destination in themselves. The Sóller train belongs to the second group. It leaves Palma, crosses the Serra de Tramuntana and arrives in the centre of the village, a few minutes on foot from the hotel, in a little over an hour of wooden carriages and open windows.

A railway still running as it did on day one

The line was built to carry the valley’s oranges to Palma when the road was still a difficult mountain pass. The carriages keep their original woodwork, their lamps and their sliding doors, and the route runs through several hand-dug tunnels.

The best-remembered stretch is the viewpoint, where the train stops for a few minutes so that the whole valley appears at once: the orchards, the stone houses and the church of Sant Bartomeu behind.

Prices and how to plan it

A single Sóller–Palma ticket costs 20 € and a return 28 €. The Palma station is at Eusebi Estada 1 and the Sóller one is on the village square. It is worth checking the timetable the day before, as it changes with the season.

Our recommendation: take the train out in the morning, spend the day in Palma and come back in the middle of the afternoon, when the light comes in sideways through the orange trees. At reception we will help you with the timetable for whichever day you choose.
