The Tramuntana coast in summer: coves, villages and sunsets

The coast of the Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the most special settings in Mallorca. Its mountains, which drop down to the sea, create a landscape of cliffs, small coves, charming villages and some of the most emblematic corners of the largest of the Balearic Islands.

Curiosities of the Serra de Tramuntana

The Serra de Tramuntana holds many curiosities that have shaped this unique setting. It is the result of centuries of relationship between people and nature. Across its mountains you will see old systems of channels and irrigation canals that made it possible to use the water, as well as countless terraces that transformed the slopes to make cultivation possible. Alongside them, “pedra en sec”, dry stone, has become one of the Serra’s most characteristic features, with thousands of walls built simply by fitting stones together, with no cement at all. Its wildlife also includes unique species, such as the ferreret, a small amphibian endemic to Mallorca that lives in some of the most isolated streams of the Serra de Tramuntana.

Among its most spectacular landscapes are the Torrent de Pareis, an impressive canyon formed by high rock walls that reaches the sea beside Sa Calobra, creating one of the island’s most special spots; the GR-221 walking routes that run alongside the sea and link the villages of the Serra from Sóller through Deià, Valldemossa and Banyalbufar, among others; and the Sa Foradada viewpoint.

Coves, villages and landscapes of the north coast

Travelling the coast of the Serra de Tramuntana during the summer months lets you discover some of Mallorca’s most spectacular landscapes. One of the most famous roads is the MA-10, which crosses much of the Serra, connecting different villages and taking you to viewpoints and corners where the mountains meet the sea. From Andratx, at the south-western end of the Serra, to places such as Deià or Valldemossa, you follow a coast defined by cliffs, viewpoints and small coves. One of the best known spots is, as we mentioned, Sa Calobra, reached along the MA-2141 on a spectacular winding route that crosses the mountains down to the coast. On the way you will find the famous Nus de Sa Corbata, a 270-degree curve where the road passes underneath itself.

Port de Sóller, for its part, is one of the best places to enjoy the coast during the summer. Its bay, surrounded by the Tramuntana mountains, lets you combine a day at the beach with a walk by the sea, Mediterranean food or a range of water activities. Its location also makes it an excellent starting point for discovering other parts of the coast from the water.

Discovering the Serra by sea

One of the best ways to discover the north coast is by boat from Port de Sóller. It gives you a unique and completely different perspective on the coast, as well as taking you into the Mediterranean seascape. From the hotel you can reach Port de Sóller comfortably on the historic tram, whose stop is a few metres away. Once there you will find different ways to spend a day on the water, from ferry excursions to boat hire or private charters, suited to different needs and preferences.

Along the coast of the Serra there are various points from which to enjoy the moment. One of the best known for watching the sunset is Sa Foradada, in Deià. This emblematic stretch of coast takes its name from the distinctive rock formation that juts into the sea with a great hole through it. From the surrounding area you can watch the sun slowly disappear over the Mediterranean, creating one of the most photographed scenes in the Serra de Tramuntana. The Ses Ànimes viewpoint, beside the Torre d’Es Verger in Banyalbufar, is another option for the sunset. This old defence tower, built in the sixteenth century, offers wide views over the coast and the cliffs of the area.

Closer to the Sóller valley, Port de Sóller itself offers an impressive setting, with the sun sinking between the mountains that surround the bay. You can also go up to the Es Cap Gros lighthouse to watch the sunset with panoramic views over Port de Sóller and the Mediterranean. Another option is the Ses Barques viewpoint, on the MA-10 in the mountains between Sóller and the Cúber reservoir, where you can enjoy the sunset and round off the experience.

Tips for enjoying summer in the Tramuntana

During the summer months it is worth planning visits to some of the most popular places in the Serra de Tramuntana in advance. Starting the day early lets you enjoy the roads, villages and coves in greater peace, and avoids the hottest hours.

It is also important to carry enough water, especially if you plan to walk a route or spend several hours exploring. And when driving through the Serra, bear in mind the nature of its roads, which in some stretches are narrow and full of bends.
