Cala Deià from the Alcázar: a thoroughly Mediterranean day out

The Sóller valley, set between the Mediterranean and the Serra de Tramuntana, lets you enjoy both the mountains and the coast in one of the loveliest and most spectacular corners of the Balearic Islands. On the north coast of Mallorca, the Alcázar Hotel Sóller is the base from which to discover the most privileged spots around us. Places such as the Barranc de Biniaraix, the Puig de L’Ofre or Es Gorg Blau, reached along the many routes that follow the GR-221, and, in the spring and summer months, places along the coast, including routes close to the sea and some of the most iconic coves in this part of Mallorca. So today we suggest visiting one of those wonderful coves. Today we are going to Cala Deià.

How to get to Cala Deià

Cala Deià is relatively close to the Alcázar Hotel Sóller. In the municipality of Deià, it can be reached in several ways.

The first option is the walk linking the Sóller valley with the cove itself along the GR-221, which takes about two and a half hours. From the Alcázar Hotel you head for the Camí d’Es Rost, where the route begins, directly opposite the Sóller petrol station at the start of the Camí dels Cinc Ponts. It is a perfect option for walkers and a very special way to get to know the coast, and you can come back by bus, catching it at the stop right at the top of the path down to Cala Deià.

Another option is to take the bus both ways, walking down from the stop and back up again to return. That said, the stretch is fairly long and rather hard going, especially on the way back, because of the gradient.

And finally, you can go in your own vehicle, or by boat with one of the companies in the port that run private charters to the coves of the north coast of Mallorca.

While you can certainly drive there, it can be awkward: in spring and summer the car park has limited capacity and the road is closed with a barrier once it is full, which means you cannot drive through after that.

That is why going by scooter is a much better idea. It is one of the most comfortable ways to make the most of the cove, with complete freedom. So that is the option we will choose today.

Getting to Cala Deià by scooter

To reach Cala Deià by scooter you can hire one from Viento Scooter, a company renting 125cc Lambrettas less than a minute on foot from the Alcázar Hotel Sóller, right beside the Plaza del Mercado. Once you have your scooter, you leave the Plaza del Mercado heading for Deià on the turning off the main Sóller road, between the Monument roundabout and the Groenk pizzeria roundabout.

From there you join the road that links Sóller and Deià, a road that skirts the coast and offers plenty of viewpoints where you can stop and take in the Mediterranean landscape, until, after about 20 minutes, you reach the turning down to Cala Deià. That is where the bus stop mentioned above is.

From here you carry on down by scooter to the cove’s car park, leaving your Lambretta less than 3 minutes on foot from the sea.

Enjoying Cala Deià

Once you arrive you find one of the most beautiful coves in Mallorca, set beneath impressive cliffs, with clear turquoise water, a calm atmosphere and a spectacular mountain backdrop that invites you to switch off and enjoy the island’s natural beauty. A perfect place to relax in the heart of the Mediterranean.

Eating at Cala Deià

You can of course bring your own food, but Cala Deià has two idyllic restaurants. Both specialise in fresh fish and both have terraces facing the sea: Ca’s Patró March and Ca’n Lluc. Without doubt the perfect complement to your visit.

If you want to eat at Ca’s Patró March you will need to have booked in advance, as it is very hard to find a table without a reservation. Reception can help you book whenever you like. For Ca’n Lluc you should simply turn up, as they work more on a walk-in basis, although you can also book. Both offer a thoroughly Mediterranean dining experience and come highly recommended.

Heading back to the Alcázar Hotel Sóller

After a day at Cala Deià you can ride back on your Lambretta at dusk. It is the same road you took in the morning, and it gives you a magical landscape the whole way back, with the sunset behind you and panoramic views of the Sóller valley and the Serra de Tramuntana in all its glory.
