A VISIT TO BEN CALÇAT: ONE OF THE FEW REMAINING TRADITIONAL MALLORCAN SHOE FACTORIES IN THE BALEARIC ISLANDS

Thanks to our excellent location, the Alcázar Hotel Sóller offers us the chance to enjoy the experiences provided by the Sóller Valley in a very special way, immersing ourselves in the authentic historical and cultural tradition that defines not only our valley but also the very essence of Mallorca. Beyond its cuisine, its iconic landscapes and the charm of its streets, the Sóller Valley also hides little artisanal gems that connect us directly with the island’s most authentic essence. Among these, Ben Calçat stands out as one of the few remaining traditional Mallorcan shoe factories in the Balearic Islands, where tradition, history and craftsmanship come together to continue making shoes to this day, adding unique value to the craftsmanship of our valley.

THE HISTORY OF BEN CALÇAT

Ben Calçat was founded on 9 March 1975 in Puerto de Sóller by the Miró family as a small artisan workshop specialising in the manufacture of belts, sandals and bags. From the outset, the project was based on manual labour, a deep understanding of the craft and the use of quality materials – values that have defined its journey over the years.

Over time, and due to changes in the sector, particularly the rising cost of raw materials, the brand adapted and evolved, shifting its production towards traditional Mallorcan footwear. This transformation allowed the business not only to continue operating but also to specialise in one of the most authentic expressions of local craftsmanship. Years later, the business moved from the Port of Sóller to the town centre, specifically to the iconic Calle de la Luna, at number 74. For a time, both premises coexisted, until this location was finally established as the sole point of reference. Today, Ben Calçat keeps alive a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation for over three decades, becoming a benchmark for traditional Mallorcan footwear and a clear example of the evolution and endurance of traditional trades on the island.

WHAT WILL WE FIND AT BEN CALÇAT?

After a 10-minute walk from the Alcázar Hotel Sóller, passing through Plaça Constitució and along Carrer de Sa Lluna, we arrive at Ben Calçat. As soon as we step inside, we realise that this is much more than just a shop: it is an opportunity to discover first-hand one of Mallorca’s most authentic traditions, thanks to those who have kept this craft alive for generations. Inside, you’ll find a total of five unique models of handcrafted shoes, made from high-quality natural leathers such as ‘nubuck’, ‘serratge’ or ‘full-grain’, available in a wide variety of colours.

The value of the handcrafted work is reflected in every product: from cutting the leather to the final finish. Every detail is carefully considered to offer comfortable, sturdy and durable footwear, suited to everyday life without losing its traditional essence and distinctive character.

Among all the models, the “porqueres” stand out in particular, one of the most iconic types of footwear in Mallorca. Legend has it that the first “porqueres” came about when a poor Ibizan, having arrived on the island and found himself without shoes, used an old cartwheel and a piece of canvas to make his own footwear. Over time, this style has evolved without losing its essence, moving from the traditional colours—black, brown and natural—to a wide range of colours that make them easy to pair with any outfit. Today, they are manufactured in both summer versions, combining canvas and leather, and winter versions, made entirely of leather, always offering comfort and durability. Furthermore, they remain very much a part of local life, being worn by many villagers as part of traditional costumes during such notable celebrations as the festival of Sa Fira i Es Firó

Alongside these, we can discover other traditional styles such as the Menorcan ‘albarques’, the Mallorcan boot – a sturdy and versatile piece of footwear available in plain or patterned colours – and the ‘patatera’, a style with roots in farm work, characterised by its functional design, crafted to offer protection and durability. And finally, the frailera, which combines tradition and aesthetics, adding a more elegant touch to traditional Mallorcan footwear.
Furthermore, they have recently revived a very special style after years of not producing it: Paco Miró’s leather sandals, unique pieces that stand out for their details and for bearing the craftsman’s own signature, making them an even more exclusive keepsake. However, if we wish, we can delve deeper into the history of each of their pieces with the help of Paco, Maruja or Jaume, the owners and artisans of the workshop, who will be delighted to explain everything in detail, sharing the origin of each shoe, its evolution and the manufacturing process. An intimate experience that allows us to understand and appreciate the true meaning of craftsmanship. In addition to their own production, the shop also offers a carefully curated selection of renowned brands, which sit alongside the handcrafted products and complete the experience.

A visit to Ben Calçat is an experience we wholeheartedly recommend. The warm, family-like atmosphere created by the artisans invites us to discover and understand their work at our own pace. But if there is one thing that really makes the difference, it is the personal touch. Being able to chat directly with Paco, Maruja or Jaume and hear first-hand how they work, how they have kept this tradition alive over the years, and what makes each shoe special, turns the visit into something far more meaningful than a simple purchase.

For this reason, Ben Calçat offers us the chance to connect with authentic Mallorcan culture through one of its most representative crafts. Without a doubt, a very special visit! If, during your stay with us at the Alcázar Hotel Sóller, you’d like to find out more about visiting Ben Calçat or other places in the Sóller Valley and the surrounding area, our reception team will be delighted to help!
