VISIT TO FORNALUTX FROM THE ALCÁZAR HOTEL SÓLLER. ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VILLAGES IN SPAIN

The north coast of Mallorca. A magical destination thanks to its location, next to the sea and at the foot of the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains, it is the perfect place to discover the authentic historical and cultural essence of this Mediterranean island. With such special villages as Estellencs, Banyalbufar, Deià, Valldemosa, the Sóller Valley and Fornalutx, this destination is a unique place to enjoy the sea, the mountains, the gastronomy, the culture and the nature in an unparalleled way. That is why today we are going to talk about one of these special municipalities, specifically one of our neighbouring villages: the village of Fornalutx. It is one of those places that seems frozen in time, a village of golden stone, cobbled streets and picturesque facades full of flowers that make their way between the majesty of the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains and the blue sky.

FROM THE ALCÁZAR HOTEL SÓLLER TO FORNALUTX

Located in the heart of Mallorca, Fornalutx is less than a 15-minute drive from the Alcázar Hotel Sóller. So getting there by car is quite easy. You can also choose to visit Fornalutx on foot, heading towards Calle de La Luna and then climbing up to Fornalutx via Biniaraix. This is a small llogaret (hamlet) belonging to the Sóller Valley, which we invite you to discover in our article --Excursion to Biniaraix from the Alcázar Hotel. The essence of the Tramuntana llogaret--.

Whichever way you choose to get to Fornalutx, once there you will find a picturesque village that invites you to stroll around at your leisure, let yourself be carried away by the sound of water in its fountains and discover, corner by corner, the most authentic essence of the island. Among orange trees, centuries-old roofs with painted tiles, and picture-postcard viewpoints, this small village enchants everyone who visits it with its serene and deeply Mediterranean beauty.

WHAT TO SEE IN FORNALUTX

Among the essential places to visit in Fornalutx is its charming main square, the town's meeting point and the perfect place to sit and contemplate the peaceful life among stone façades and terraces with local flavour. A square adorned with stairs that lead us to the church of Sant Bartomeu, a simple and welcoming temple that forms part of the soul of the municipality. These are very special steps, down which every year in September the bull of the Fornalutx Festival descends, more specifically on the day of Es Bou. This is an ancient celebration that continues to be held in this corner of the Tramuntana mountains, in which a bull is venerated in the village square before being returned to its natural habitat.

Once you arrive at the square, we recommend having a drink there, specifically at Bar Deportivo. It is the most authentic local bar in the area, where you can enjoy a good coffee and even toast made with artisan bread baked in their own oven: El Forn de Barri.

After our coffee, we can choose to visit the Sa Rutlana area first. This is where the Fornalutx school is located, and we will reach it via a pleasant walk that will take us through Sa Rutlana to the small Fornalutx Cemetery. It is a very beautiful place with its own charm.

Next, we can head back towards the square, leaving it behind us and entering what was once the Town Hall of Fornalutx. A building dominated by its iconic tower. A 17th-century medieval defence tower with a square floor plan that offered a key vantage point for exploring the village and its surroundings, such as the routes to Biniaraix or Torre Picada. Right next to the Tower of Fornalutx is Ca'n Xoroi, the current Town Hall of the municipality and the building that houses the Museu de Teules Pintades.

This museum houses an important collection of painted tiles from Mallorca, a popular expression of protection and art dating back to the 17th century, with pieces ranging from 1691 to 1781. It is the only specialised museum on the island, with a collection that includes tiles from various locations (Deià, Inca, Palma, Sóller) and offers a complete tour of one of the villages with the most original tiles, highlighting its cultural heritage.

EATING IN FORNALUTX

After our visit to Can Xoroi, we can choose to eat in Fornalutx, and for this we recommend two options. If you are looking to enjoy authentic Mallorcan and Mediterranean cuisine, we recommend eating at the Es Turó restaurant; and if you are looking for something more international, we recommend eating at Pizzería Calzone, a place that stands out for its fresh pasta, pizzas and salads. Both places have fantastic views of the municipality of Fornalutx and the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains!

After lunch, we can take a final stroll through the area known as Camí des Mas. This path offers a beautiful route through orchards, irrigation channels and spectacular views of the Sóller valley, allowing us to discover the most authentic and rural surroundings of the village. In addition to offering panoramic views of both the village of Fornalutx and Puig Major, the highest peak on the island of Mallorca at 1,445 metres, it is a place that can be reached via the Camí des Mas if we link it to Es Portell de Sa Costa.

BACK TO THE ALCÁZAR HOTEL

After our walk along this path surrounded by nature, we will head back to the centre of Fornalutx to pick up our car and return to the Alcázar Hotel Sóller or, alternatively, walk down to the centre of the Sóller Valley to end a magical day in what is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. This is definitely a place we recommend visiting, whatever time of year you visit the north coast of Mallorca.
