THE PORT OF SÓLLER. A 100% MEDITERRANEAN PLACE

The Port of Sóller. Located in the heart of the Sierra de Tramuntana mountain range and in the centre of the north coast of Mallorca, it is a unique place that offers endless possibilities to discover the essence of an authentically Mediterranean destination. Between fishing tradition, Mallorcan character, craftsmanship and the avant-garde, Puerto de Sóller is a destination that is sure to surprise you during your stay in the Sóller Valley. From its excursions and boat charters, to the historic tram of Sóller, its beaches, its promenade, its sunsets, to its magnificent local gastronomy, this destination is a perfect choice to visit in summer during your stay at the Alcázar Hotel Sóller.

HOW TO GET TO THE PORT OF SÓLLER

There are several ways to visit the Port of Sóller: By car, by taxi, by bus or by tram. So we will go by tram, as the route itself is a truly special experience. To do so, we will take the tram from the stop located in the Market Square, right next to the Alcázar Hotel Sóller. Once inside, you will enjoy a journey through orange groves and the neighbourhoods of the town of Sóller until you reach the Port after about 20 minutes. We recommend you get off at the Sa Torre stop, where you will be able to see the sea for the first time. Once there, continue walking along the promenade towards the port, bordering the bay of the port itself until you reach the centre of the port in about 10 minutes.

Once there, we recommend having a coffee next to the moored boats in one of the most traditional bars in the area, such as Ca'n Tambora, La Payesa or El café Albatros, before continuing our tour of this wonderful Mediterranean port and discovering its most iconic places.

FISHING QUARTER OF SANTA CATALINA AND THE MUSEUM OF THE SEA

The first place to visit is the fishing quarter of Santa Catalina. A picturesque fishing quarter made up of small stone streets named after winds. A neighbourhood where you can see small fishermen's houses and which was created during the 18th century thanks to the export of local products such as citrus fruits and oil. A place where the local fishermen kept their boats and lived when they were not at sea. After getting lost in this neighbourhood, we recommend that you go up to the Santa Catalina viewpoint to discover the marvellous views of the Bay of the Port of Sóller and the Mediterranean Sea from the opposite end of the Es Cap Gros lighthouse.

A viewpoint where you will find the Oratory of Santa Catalina, dating from the 13th century, which today houses the Museu de la Mar del Puerto de Sóller (Sea Museum of the Port of Sóller). A museum that can be visited free of charge and which contains different exhibits, stories, utensils, materials and tools for the construction of traditional boats, as well as fishing elements and models that reflect the historical links that the Port of Sóller has had with maritime trade and fishing activity.

GASTRONOMY IN THE PORT OF SOLLER

After our visit to the Santa Catalina district, we will return to the centre of the Port to have lunch in one of its restaurants, as one of the most spectacular elements of the Port of Sóller is its gastronomy. With restaurants to suit all tastes, Port de Sóller offers options for a 100% Mediterranean gastronomic experience. So, if you are looking for

to enjoy fresh fish and seafood or rice dishes, we recommend restaurants such as Las Olas, Ses Oliveres or Es Canyís. If you are looking for creative and signature cuisine and tasting of flavours, we recommend Airecel Restaurant, El Villa Luisa or La Sal, and if you are travelling with children or want to eat more quickly to continue enjoying the beach and the Port, we recommend Restaurante Sirocco or Don Pedro Café Bistró on the beach d'en Repic or the pizzeria Porto in the centre.
of the Port.

SES BARQUES DE BOU AND THE FISHERMEN

After lunch, another activity that we recommend if you want to discover the origin of much of the rich local gastronomy and fishing tradition is to see the fishing boats arrive in the Port of Sóller. There are two types of boats, smaller ones that work with nets and larger ones that are trawlers or barques de bou.

Both boats moor in the farthest part of the harbour bay, next to the Military Base. The smaller ones usually come in at around 10.00 a.m. and watching them arrive is a unique experience if you want to see lobsters and fresh fish. On the other hand, the barques de bou come in at 17.00h in the afternoon, and bring large quantities of fresh fish, seafood and prawns from Sóller. Without a doubt a perfect experience to get to know the fishing and gastronomic culture of the Port of Sóller.

THE TWO BEACHES OF THE PORT OF SÓLLER

Finally, we can choose to enjoy one of the 2 beaches of the port: the beach of d'en Repic, located on the left side of the bay of the port. And the beach of Ca'n Generós, located in the centre of the port. Both beaches are sandy and offer different services such as sun loungers and parasols for hire, fresh water showers and lifeguard service. However, if you are looking for water activities such as paddle surfing, canoeing, diving, etc., we recommend you to go to Platja de C'an Generós, as there you will find most of the companies offering these activities. A perfect plan to finish off our visit to the Port of Sóller before catching the tram, this time in the very centre of the Port, just in front of the Marisol restaurant, before returning again with the tram to the Alcazar Hotel Sóller.
